Residing and crafting from the beautiful landscape of Cape Town, South Africa, I find myself continually drawn to the captivating medium of clay. It's a craft that humbles me and serves as a profound reminder of the enduring connection between our human hands and the ancient elements of our Earth. When I engage with clay, I am immersed in an inherently tactile and humbling experience. I can't help but perceive the clay as a living entity in its own right, gently guiding the creative process, allowing it to be molded and shaped only to the extent that it permits. This harmonious interaction between the artist and the medium is a constant source of reflection on the interconnectedness between us, as humans, and the natural world that sustains us.
My creative journey has been significantly influenced by a life-altering experience—a period during which I lost much of my hearing due to a rare encounter with adult measles during a peculiar epidemic between 2009 and 2011. The aftermath of this illness forced me to reevaluate how I engaged with the world, ultimately paving the way for an exploration of self and artistry that has profoundly shaped my path. As I navigated this new reality, I found myself delving into the intricate details of the measles virus cell, the very agent that had impacted my health so profoundly. I was struck by the exquisite complexity of its structure, a mesmerizing dance of shapes and forms that existed on a microscopic scale.
In the wake of our recent global pandemic, where the fragility of existence became all too apparent, and the profound impact of minuscule entities on a grand scale was starkly evident, my artistic exploration expanded. I began to explore other cellular structures—viruses, animals, bacteria—and their delicate yet intricate architectures. My sketches, designs, prints, and ceramics are visual expressions of this fascination with complex simplicity. Each layer of intricacy, each interwoven connection, infuses my work with depth and meaning.
With ceramics as a timeless medium that has endured through countless civilizations and ages, I am acutely aware of the legacy I am contributing to. Each ceramic piece has the potential to withstand the passage of time, bearing witness to the evolution of human stories across generations. My aim is to convey a profound journey of existence—a testament to the resilience of life, a tribute to the intricate ecosystems that shape our world, and a poignant reminder that even the tiniest of beings can wield a lasting influence.
